“The whole world is watching and outraged,” states Anne Novak, Executive Director of Protect Mustangs based in California. “Killing Australia’s heritage wild horses is shameful and needs to stop now!”

Special thanks to Libby Lovegrove and Lynette Sutton with boots on the ground across Australia working hard to save the brumbies.

  1. Looks like a stallion his mare andfoal. Bay is stud with all four legs extended.greycis mare bay foal.

  2. This is an example of human nature that is blind-sided..this is so wrong..these are one of God’s creatures…How dare humans interfere with his plan..a totally devilish form of murder…I hope that you will be forgiven when you cross over…but I sincerly doubt it…Shame on all the people that decided this CRUEL fate!

  3. Completely disgusting what a waste of life. Instead of killing them why don’t they geld the stallions send some vet students up there think outside the box idiots!

  4. I live in Australia and this takes place more often than you think. Most of Australia’s brumbies are not heritage, they are classed as feral pests here and there is no law against aerial culling.
I am a big believer in saving the brumbies as they are very versatile and loyal horses, I even own a rescue brumby. I also believe in humane control, don’t know if any of you are aware but Australia’s climate can be very dry for long periods which leads to overgrazing and insufficient water supplies which also impacts the native wildlife, at the moment we are in a drought period.
There are other methods like trapping but this can also be stressful on the animal being chased for long periods and most end up at the meatworks as there are not enough good homes to go around.
This is very tragic but a more humane solution to them starving to death.

  5. Geld the stallions? lol Its estimated there are around 400,000 feral horses in Australia. That’s not thinking outside the box, that’s being irrational! Its great that goodie two shoes want to save all the brumbies when they have no idea about what goes on in this country!

  6. @ Laura are they going to shoot all the cattle too so they dont die in drought,, I dont think so, Management can be Humane its just that it takes planning and foresight, something gun happy morons think is humane, I have spoken to shooters and they all say moving target moving platform is a recipe for disaster, Besides is it not the survival of the fitest that makes them what they have been reveered for for over a Century

  7. @ Laura We’ve had a lot of research in the USA regarding range damage. One important piece is the PEER Report http://www.peer.org/news/news-releases/2012/05/14/livestock’s-heavy-hooves-impair-one-third-of-blm-rangelands/ .

“Commercial livestock operations are clearly a major force driving degradation of wild places, jeopardy to wildlife, major loss of water quality and growing desertification throughout the American West,” stated PEER Advocacy Director Kirsten Stade.

In Australia, Allan Savory has worked with pastoralists (ranchers) using livestock to mimic wild herds in order to reverse desertification and heal the land. Sadly land management is still backwards in the U.S.A. and Australia but take a look at his method: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5LHoh-OKUfU

    Allan Savory’s TED Talk: http://www.ted.com/talks/allan_savory_how_to_green_the_world_s_deserts_and_reverse_climate_change.html

If there is a water issue in the area aren’t the wild horses migrating?

Beware of the fracking projects for Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) for export to the Asia coming to the Kimberley. Fracking uses tons of water and besides polluting water wells and aquifers it has been known to cause rivers to recede. See the Australian well that is poisoned with flammable LNG as seen in GASLAND 2 trailer here:

It looks like some people are commenting here too: https://www.facebook.com/ProtectMustangs

  8. 1) As Laura (above) said. Gelding 400K stallions is ridiculous! To perform any veterinarian procedure on the horses, first you got to catch them. Do you have any idea what logistical would be required to achieve that objective?

    2) Additionally, even if you were able to carry that out; there would be still a very large population of feral horses still on the land for the next 20 years, which sort defeats the purpose.

    3) These horses are not natives they are *feral* i.e. they are an introduced species. As as hard-hooved animal their impact on the environment is immense in terms of accelerating the degrading the land, specifically opening the land to accelerated wind erosion at a minimum.

  9. I did not know they were still doing this.
Why do they just leave them lay.
    It is disgusting.

  10. This is a barbaric thing to do, by sick gun toting idiots. There are better ways of culling the Brumbies than killing them from a darn helicopter. Some don’t die straight away and die horrible slow deaths. If it has to done it should be done humanely, by responsible people. I agree that in times of drought and hard times their numbers should be reduced, but not by shooting indiscriminately, including pregnant mares and mares and foals. There are old. injured, and sick among them, that it would be a blessing to HUMANELY euthanase them, rather than they slowly starve to death. If it’s planned out, and they can be yarded, checked and decisions made then, that would be a much better way to go.

  11. This is disgusting. I want it stopped. Is there any petition that I can sign? So wrong and pathetic.

  12. I just found this — could be the brumbie cull/murder was illegal:

    http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/regional/countryman/a/-/news/19615673/no-consultation-claim-over-horse-kill/

    excerpt:
“Experienced pastoralists and the RSPCA have backed a mass cull of thousands of feral horses on two Kimberley stations despite claims from the Aboriginal manager of one of the properties that he was not consulted.

Bililunna manager Mark Gordon wrote to Aboriginal Affairs Minister Peter Collier and Lands Minister Brendon Grylls last week pleading with them to prevent the cull.

The letter was signed by Mr Gordon and eight others who said they were traditional owners who had not been consulted and were opposed to aerial shooting of horses on their land.

The Aboriginal Lands Trust and the Kimberley Land Council yesterday rejected the claim, saying the cull had been discussed with traditional owners on several occasions and unanimously supported.”

  13. It is sick!!!!!!!! STOP this barbarian action! Respect nature, respect animals, respect yourselves!!!!
