In response to a lawsuit filed Jan.26 by Friends of Animals (FoA) and Protect Mustangs against the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM), the roundup of wild horses and forced drugging of mares planned by the government agency in the Pine Nut Herd Management Area (HMA) of Nevada has been halted at least until Feb. 17.  The court has set Feb. 9 as the hearing date for FoA and Protect Mustangs to make their preliminary injunction motion.

  1. Please,
Stop the round ups. Let our wild mustangs live in peace. Don’t wipe out our American Heritage and History. This is a genocide.

  2. Here it comes, a hearing on February 9 to stop the round up, removals and PZP-22 use on our wild mares. Protect Mustangs’ Anne Novack has contributed her time to writing and working this lawsuit with the Friends of Animals legal team perusing animal law and BLM policy, actions and the 1971 Act as it now stands ravaged by amendments BLM prefers to what was once the law.

Pine Nut HMA is the battleground and we would like no prisoners taken, no mares darted or mismanaged without needed science to be the guide and bottom line decision maker. This is the time to decide to keep our wild horses and burros on their lands within a thriving ecological community of wildlife without the constant presence of cattle and sheep that overgraze. Donate to Protect Mustangs and thank Anne for her ceaseless work for our wild horses and burros.

  3. STOP hurting our Horses! Abuse, slaughtering this is NOT how civilization should be treating any LIVING being. STEP UP AND GIVE THEM A VOICE PLEASE

  4. The wild horse of the usa is a world wide icon. use pzp on them is not the way to go.its to harmful them and the wider comunity or killing them off .USA is in need of a new look and plan .an your not just distroying them .you killing part of a your heritage and a native animal to there end

  5. There should be no problem as to the lawsuit. These horses belong to this land. Who tells BLM that PZP is safe? They have no idea of what protect means. They think it means annihilation of all wild horses and burros at any expense.
The round up of these horses by saying it is overpopulated is ridiculous. 90,000 acres and 332 horses is far from overpopulated. Underpopulated is the correct term.
The roundup is cruel snd abusive to these icons of the west.
Foals legs broken . Unable to follow their mothers. Some mares and stallions falling and dragged by one leg to a place they will never return. And then to administer an insecticide to be used as a contraceptive is the final stage to end the existence of these wild horses. The BLM knows this. I truly believe that they are heartless. The west was made by these horses ;how can any American do this? How can any rancher forget his roots? How can the humane society forget that abuse is illegal?
I will tell you. Money and greed and definately a sickness that can kill so easily and think it is fun.
These wild horses are native to this land.
The white man which includes me is not. Yet he makes these rules not truly knowing or seeming to care what happens to these wild
Beauties.I am ashamed and deeply saddened.

  6. Less than 400 hundred wild horse’s left, removing these indigenous horse’s off the range puts the eco system unbalanced. In the hearts of the American people want the horse’s protected by federal law that is enforce by the highest degree. We want PZP never to be used on our horse’s ever . The 55.thousand you have put in pens for a depressed life, sending our horses to slaughter, to rodeo’s to a cruel abusive death . We demand you to stop and leave what few horse’s left in the wild along . Donna Slocum

  7. Don’t let this go unanswered, don’t let this be just a pause only to continue on with this madness, but do let this be the clarion call, which will put a stop to this madness against Wild Horses!!

  8. Those horses have lived in the Pine Nuts for along time, you go up and give a tour, but tell people before going up not to comment against what you are saying or everyone in the group will be brought back. What happen to freedom of speech! I lived in the Dayton area for years now, vegetation doesn’t start to really grow until March, and the horses in that area look healthy not skinny.
Let them live free on the range God left for them! You keep taking more range away from them, plus the ranchers. People enjoy going up and seeing them!
It’s a big tourist attraction, why take money away from the State when we could be putting it into the State.

  9. I don’t know where to start. I guess first and foremost I would like those involved in this should reconsider because they are wrong. It’s beyond me how supposedly people with common sense can do this.

PZP used on wild horses is one of the most abusive cruel things you have come up with so far!!! If you were telling the truth about the size of the herds then I can see need for something to keep the herds down but not PZP. The truth is however your statistics on the size of the herds is purposely skewed to suit your plan to eliminate our free roaming heritages of the west!!

You surely know in some cases mares will be sterile from PZP and especially fillies. The chances of the fillies being sterile is very high and the small herds that you are leaving free will disappear. Give these horses a chance to show you what they can do by being left alone! They need to be free on their land that they were given to sustain them without interference from any of us.

  10. The Wild horses and the range they run on. All belong to the people not the government. And yes the BLM is part of the government. It is something. How they are trying kill off the biggest part of this countries history. Just like the big government farms are trying to kill off the small family farms. All in the name of greed. Before long. There will be big companies filling up the wild horse range. All because of the greed. It is time that the people. Who really own the range and the wild horses. Had their voices heard. That is We the people. Not the government of greed.

  11. The only hope for saving our wild horses from extinction roaming free on their native ranges is to stop roundups and stop the use of PZP on herds already at the critical threshold of being unviable. This requires that they be left alone and those kept in BLM pens returned to their native ranges. Land must be returned to them that is protected from use by cattle and sheep and from mining, fracking, and any other form of corporate destruction.

  12. May God be with us as we fight the good fight!!!!! Let’s do this. We should also claim First Amendment violation for that public meet incident!!!!!! I’d love to take the government run BLM to the Supreme Court!!!!!!!!!!!

  13. Quotes are from BLM Pine Nut Herd Management Area web page.
“This Herd Management Area (HMA) encompasses approximately 90,000 acres.
The appropriate management level for this HMA is between 119 to 179 horses.”
BLM has said only 119 to 179 wild horses should be allowed to live legally on 90,000 public acres.
“A population inventory completed in August 2014 documented 332 wild horses.”
BLM states “Excessive grazing from wild horses has not only degraded the sage-grouse habitat, but has also removed and reduced the number of native grass plants in areas of the HMA.”
…332 wild horses on 90,000 acres of public land.
…Who is really eating the grass, disturbing the sage grouse habitat, and not re-seeding the grasses (as horses do in their manure)? …Could it possibly be the thousands of cattle and sheep allowed to graze on this public land set aside for our wild horses?

“Of the approximate 132 wild horses released back to the range, an estimated 66 mares will receive a 22-month Porcine Zona Pellucida (PZP-22).”
This will take the herd below healthy genetic variability levels. It will interrupt the natural selection that has kept our wild horses healthy and thriving for hundreds and hundreds of years.

Low AML plus PZP will wipe out our wild herds.

Contact (BLM) John Axtell at 775-885-6146. These phone calls let them know we are here and we know what they are doing….Let them know this “over AML” code isn’t fooling us anymore. BLM plans 132 wild horses (66 of which will be on birth control) allowed to live on 90,000 acres. …Tell BLM the Appropriate Management Levels are set too low in every Herd Management Area.

  14. Catoor is raking in millions on the government contracts to round up our wild horses by helicopter. Few Americans have the strength of character to turn down millions when it is legal, aboveboard, easy, and patriotic to do so by helping out Uncle Sam. Wild horse advocates know what a filthy business it is, but the news media has largely ignored it up to now. Perhaps the Pine Nut herd lawsuit will turn the tide. Friends of Animals and Protect Mustangs could use some help here. All wildlife advocates and activists should pitch in with moral support, solidarity, strength of purpose and money. Lawsuits are expensive and this is a worthy cause.

  15. It is a sad state of affairs when birth control could become a potentially irreversible lack of fertility for a creature that should be revered as an icon of North America – they helped us build our country after all…in the days before machines. These are some of the best horses we have in our herds on Planet Earth – though “now” the ranchers tend to disagree, often labeling them with designations of being feral and pests – attributes that devalue them lower than the cows and sheep that make them money – of course – overtaking the very lands that were protected for the horses in 1971 – Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971. The Wild Horses have sustained their breed through the means of survival of the fittest, not by forced pedigrees! The human population will regret this medical intervention that has been forced upon the Wild Horses, especially if we, as stewards of Planet Earth and its animal inhabitants, continue on this lazy path of “horse management,” rather, it truly is management into extinction!. Hopefully more will realize it before it is too late, unlike other animals that have fallen into extinction. There are other ways to responsibly care for these majestic animals that don’t involve death, abuse and messing with “Mother Nature.” Hands off our Wild Horses! ~ Alynn Dalton

  16. Let’s pray that the outcome of this lawsuit will shed light on the truth of what is really happening to our indigenous wild horses. America is angry at these outrageous and blatant lies that the BLM tells. Angry about the tax money being stolen from American citizens to fund these crimes against a native of this land. This not only goes against human decency, but against our morals as well! Shame on the PZP pushers that have joined in the promotion of wild horse extinction in this country.

  17. Saying please to BLM to have common sense practices will not and has never worked… it takes rigorous litigation and negative public exposure. The irreparable mess to social hierarchies of herds done by PZP and the manipulation and pressuring of some advocates to agree to this “kind of disruptive intervention” is not “management” it is cruel, unwanted and inappropriate. We must strive for eco-sanctuaries such as Reserve Design, which states clearly how to make it a reality – yet BLM refuses to consider any humane approach that requires a reform based on focus for wild horses… while they keep operating on bogus facts, bogus science and bogus data… while getting millions which they allocate to wipe out and extinction. It is a crossroads now where all must come together and not cave in to BLM monopoly which dooms our horses.

  18. MAN UP AMERICA!!” WE ARE NOT THE HOME OF THE FREE AND THE BRAVE WHEN THIS BLM WAR IS RAGING AGAINST OUR OWN WILD HORSE FAMILIES!! LITTLE BABY FOALS ARE BEING CHASED WITH HELICOPTERS, COME ON!!!! STOP ALL THIS BLM MADNESS, TORTURE AND CRUELTY, INJECTING AND STERILIZING OUR WILD HORSES AS THEY ARE ALREADY NEAR EXTINCTION!! THERE AS TO BE A BETTER WAY TO HELP OUR WILD HORSES WITH OUR TAX DOLLARS, DON’T ABUSE THEM OR DESTROY THEM!! RISE UP AMERICA STAND UP AND PROTECT OUR WILD HORSES, THEY DESERVE TO LIVE AND HAVE THEIR RIGHTFUL FREEDOM!!! ALL BE THEIR VOICE RIGHT NOW!!!! ANIMAL CRUELTY IS A CRIME !! CHASING OUR WILD HORSES TILL THEY INJURE THEMSELVES IS PREMEDITATED INJURY, THAT IS A FELONY!!!!!! AMERICA IT IS TIME FOR A HUMAN BARRIER’S TO PROTECT OUR VOICELESS WILD HORSE FAMILIES!!!!
    TINA WOOTEN FOR ALL
    EQUINE RIGHTS!!!!!!!

  19. Thank you Anne Novak and Craig Downer of Protect Mustangs and Friends of Animals for having the guts to make a stand for the wild horses of the Pine Nut HMA. Yours is the kind of courage that once made America great. Clearly, the BLM functions as a crony to corporate and ranching interests who want to take over the legal land set aside for the wild horses and they believe the public is stupid enough to believe that the only way to ‘preserve’ the wild horse population is to drug it to death like we do with everything else in America. Every biologist knows that the natural vitality of any species is found in its wild, unfettered state and that 332 horses on 90,000 acres of land is healthy. Let’s get to the real issue here- are we going for extinction? If so, who is to gain in achieving this? The dark side of America’s reputation is that we like changing the rules of the game, even break the rules/laws if we have to in order to win. The reality is that unless there is a sustainable resolution to land management using holistic approaches, then we all lose as this travesty will no doubt mark the end of our humanity if we see fit to destroy not only one of the most ancient, cooperative species on earth, the wild horse, but also the land on which they live and our humanity as well. There is no excuse not to explore Reserve Design as outlined by Craig C. Downer as a means to manage wild horses. Good on you Anne, Craig and Friends of Animals- You’re the last hope for a country whose priorities continue to slide into the gutter.

  20. This has to stop , all the wild Mustangs and burros need to stay FREE and ROAMING WILD. There is A lot of wild horses left i the wild and it’s all about big money and the BLM and the Ranchers having the water rights and with that they will have the gas rights. This needs to stop and now,.

  21. I agree This has to stop , all the wild Mustangs and burros need to stay FREE and ROAMING WILD. There is A lot of wild horses left i the wild and it’s all about big money and the BLM and the Ranchers having the water rights and with that they will have the gas rights. This needs to stop and now,. leave the wild mustangs & burros alone that our American history

  22. I CAN’T BELIEVE THAT “EVERYTHING GOES FOR THE MIGHTY DOLLAR”
WE CARE ABOUT NOTHING UNLESS THERE IS A MONEY VALUE TO IT.
“EVERYTHING IS FOR PROFIT ” . WE WILL EVEN SELL OUT OUR OWN WILD HORSES……SOMETHING THAT IS AMERICA’S HERRITAGE…AND IMMAGE..;. SOMETHING UNIQUE TO OUR COUNTRY…..WE WILL NOT HESSITATE TO SELL-OUT THESE MAGNIFFICIENT ANIMALS INTO THE SLAUGHTER HOUSE; JUST SO THAT WE CAN ACCOMMODATE THE RICH RANCHERS WITH THEIR UGLY COWS AND SHEEP. ..THESE ARE PUBLIC LANDS…..THESE MAGNIFICENT HORSES HAVE A RIGHT TO EXIST HERE…..IS EVERYTHING ABOUT PROFIT AND REVENUE.????don’t WE CARE ABOUT OUR LANDS AND WILDLIFE……….HOW LOW ARE WE GOING TO FALL AMERICA;?????? AT THIS POINT, SOME DAY WE WILL NOT HAVE ANY WILD HORSES OR WILD ANYTHING; THE WAY WE ARE GOING…..IT WILL BE AN UGLY COUNTRY WITH JUST HUMANS AND THEIR UGLY HERDS OF CATTLE…..ALL FOR THE MIGHTY DOLLAR.
    HOW SHAMEFULL…….HOW DISGUSTING ….

  23. SAVE AMERICA’S WILD HORSES…..FROM THE GREED OF THE RICH RANCHERS AND THE CORRUPT BLM (U.S. Bureau of Land Management ).
PROTECT OUR WILD MUSTANGS AND LET THESE BASTARDS KNOW THAT NOT EVERYTHING IS FOR SALE!!!!!!!

  24. Is it too late to stop the total destruction of our Wild Horses and Burros? Our iconic native American WH&Bs are rapidly disappearing; they are being destroyed physically and chemically, PZP, for the benefit of private persons. This is the epitome of the destruction of Democracy by Capitalism. The fox is guarding the hen house when the very agency appointed to care for and maintain and expand our herds of WH&Bs are in cahoots with the Welfare Ranchers, the hunters, and the mining and energy companies who covet the land, hate our beloved WH&Bs, and have corrupted their guardians – the BLM.

Those who dare to speak out about this travesty are treated terribly and those who are in charge of our horses are corrupted. Can you imagine our federally protected American symbols of Freedom, the Wild Horse and Burro, our PUBLIC RESOURCE is being destroyed for PRIVATE PROFIT?
