Federal agency provides shade at adoption event so why not at corrals? #Shade4Mustangs

The Bureau of Land Management (BoLM) is providing shade for the captive wild horses up for adoption at the Wyoming State Fair this weekend.

It’s time for the Wild Horse and Burro Program to follow their own example.

We would like to see the federal agency, who rakes in more than $4 billion a year in receipts, provide shade and shelter for all the captive wild horses in holding facilities. More than 43,500 people have signed our petition for shade and shelter (http://chn.ge/1DriOvN).

On June 9, 2013 Nevada State Senator Mark Manendo and Anne Novak, Executive Director of Protect Mustangs officially requested shade for the wild horses and burros at Palomino Valley Center, near Reno and elsewhere to ensure the welfare of these treasured equids. Their request for shade was refused and the sprinkler mitigation offered was unsuccessful because shelter is needed.

Now it is the summer of 2016 and due to public pressure some facilities are taking baby steps and some are conducting trials but it’s not enough. America’s captive icons of freedom deserve shade now!

The BoLM partnered with UC Davis for an expensive shade study that determined wild horses don’t need shade when they are in the corrals. It’s obvious they like having access to shade and use it as seen in the photo taken at Palomino Valley Center last week. The BoLM continues to conduct various shade trials while the years fly by and the wild ones suffer. Please sign and share the petition (http://chn.ge/1DriOvN) to get the BoLM to stop dragging their feet and do the right thing before more wild horses die.

Send this blog post to your congressional representative and two senators so they can get this done for the captives in the pens with no voice.

Protect Mustangs is a nonprofit organization who protects and preserves native and wild horses.

  1. My dog does not stand in the sun during this heat because she has an option. Give the horses an option.

  3. BLM ought to just honestly title themselves as to the production and encouragement of animal abuse.

  4. If the BLM and UC Davis think that the wild horses don’t need shelter and shade in the holding pens, they are sadly mistaken. This has been proven by the deaths of many horses in the pens. If shade is not needed why put them under shelter when the BLM is conducting its adoption programs. It is time that the BLM was put on notice to provide proper care for the wild horses it is holding in the pens.

Summer is hot and the necessity for air conditioning is important. The officials of the BLM don’t deprive themselves of any comfort. They work in air conditioned offices and don’t go out unless it is absolutely necessary.

  5. Wild horses do need shade from the hot sun in summer. In the wild they move to higher and cooler elevations and seek shade during extreme heat of day in the shade of canyon walls and trees whenever available.
Please. If you feel you must imprison these wild horses, at least provide them with shade, plenty of cool clean water and fresh feed. WHICH THEY WOULD DO FOR THEMSELVES HAD YOU NOT IMPRISONED THEM.

  6. Leave the wild horses wild!!!
Stop tourturing them and killing them.
    There in a concentration camp.
Don’t let greedy oil and cattle people take there land. Have we learned nothing from the horse ? They helped build this country.
    Irradiation is not the answer!
I don’t want my tax money going to cruelty to horses. BLM has to be stopped!!!!

  7. Waste of time and money for this research! All animals need shade and shelter. Common sense just doesn’t prevail with BLM.
And let me add that if some of the 2.8 million cows grazing on federal land were removed more of these horses could live wild as they were meant to. Every time we buy mid west beef or hit the drive thru burger joint we contribute to the demise of these noble animals.
This country was built on the back of the horse. Battles were fought. Feilds were plowed. Railroads built. And I could go on. They deserve respect and protection!
