  1. Craig is such a caring advocate with lots of smarts when it comes to the soul, the earth and the animals…I’ve heard him stand up to the devils advocates with pride protecting correct morals and values for life. His brilliant mind and concepts are always welcome on my planet!

  2. I first met Craig Downer nearly four years ago, on the second day of the Twin Peaks roundup.
I had been a vocal wild equine advocate for only a short time, but had become entranced (and a *little* intimidated) by some of the more erudite and educated among advocates; Craig Downer was one of them.
When I volunteered to go to Twin Peaks as an observer (my first roundup), I understood a small group of us would be attending, and that Craig would be among them. I became nervous, and slightly star-struck.
So imagine my surprise when this gentle, friendly, well-spoken man introduced himself, and shook my hand…
Craig is a rare mixture of scientist and poet – and despite his letters of academia, views wild horses and burros with absolute awe. Engaging him in conversation is not for those who can follow only one train of linear thought. Craig’s thought processes are an entire rail yard.
He’s in love with the land – the plants and animals that occupy it – no matter where he happens to be hauling that backpack. I have a friend who hiked with him once, with Craig urging them always to go ‘just a little further’ – unmindful of the blowing snow. For Craig, the snow seemed to be simply an interesting new feature added to an already interesting quest…
For Craig, I think, it isn’t about the destination. There may not even be a destination. It’s about the journey to the next journey.
Justice and protection for wild horses and burros is Craig’s raison d’etre, his quietly determined purpose. His manner is patient and instructive – unless the subject is his companion Lightning, a survivor of the brutal Calico roundup in 2009-10. It’s here Craig offers us a glimpse of passion when he speaks of the beautiful Palomino stallion he acquired and keeps safe; Craig’s smile and excitement when speaking of his friend (and, I suspect, personal idol) is unmistakable.
I am a fan. A little less star-struck perhaps, but no less a devoted admirer.

  3. The information that Craig Downer has gathered for this book puts into perspective what we as humans are doing and allowing to be done that will destroy our lands. Please meet and visit with him if he gets to your area.

  4. go Craig Downer speak for those who don’t have a voice and fight for the loves who are made to be free but are held in harm’s way for our love of money and power. Be the spirit that moves mankind back to knowledge and sanity before it is too late. Go with the Grandfathers to protect and the four legged I pray for angels to your side!

  5. Sadly, due to medical reasons, I’m a bit jealous of the people who will be in attendance during his weekend’s Western States Horse Expo, as they will get a unique opportunity at being able to listen to the shared knowledge that, Craig Downer has to offer.

  6. Did you know that reknowned wild horse & burro advocae and author Craig Downer is also a pianist and composer ? If that sounds like a stretch then ask him about his CD, “Rhapsody for Wild Horses” at the Western Horse Expo this weekend. He’ll have some CDs on hand and will be signing copies of his latest book “THe Wild Horse Conspiracy” in the ‘book corral’ -for much of this weekend in Sacramento. Be sure to ask him for info on additional proofs that wild horses have occupied North America continuously for many millenia, before and also after the last Ice Age and hence why they should be protected under the US Endangered Species Act in addition to the sadly flawed Wild Horse & Burro Act of 1971.

  7. If you haven’t read Craig Downer’s “Wild Horse Conspiracy”, I would highly recommend you do so. Mr. Downer”s years of research from evolution to to his personal experiences will educate us all as to what is REALLY going on. His love for our Wild Horses/Burros has taken him on a journey of a lifetime. I am so greatful to him that he has put into print the truth about our Wild Ones. The corruption, which tries to hide the truth. The brutality of the round-ups. If you want to educate yourself then The Wild Horse Conspiracy is a must read. Please confine Mr. Downey to keep us all educated.

  8. Craig is on the road. Go meet him. He is single minded and all for the wild horses. He has much to tell you and can help you understand why our wild horses need the help of all Americans to stay free and healthy. Go meet Craig and listen to him tell about our wonderful wild mustangs and what has become of them and their lands.

  9. Craig Downer is a Wildlife Ecologist who has spent years traveling the Americas, studying, researching, and educating people about the ecological importance of our native wild horses. Through his books, articles, and public appearances, Craig brings the plight of our Mustangs before the public. Visit the expo to support Craig Downer’s work.

  10. Craig is the real thing alright. He’s the type of person who should rightfully be entrusted with the future of the American mustang, instead of the bureaucrats who really serve other masters.

  11. Craig Downer made us aware of the cruel blm wild horse and burro round-ups a few years ago, please read his eye opening book and become aware to what our government is doing to our horses.

  12. I am always in a hurry. Craig Downer is one you MUST slow down for. Really listen to what he says. He speaks from a heart and intellect that is rare but precious. He speaks for our wild land, the animal who live there and us who could flourish amongst them. You will know when you are near him that his spirit is invincible. But as others say, he is so friendly and engaging. Enjoy meeting him, he loves it.
