URGENT: Comments due February 3 against wild horse mare sterilization experiment

574px-Blm.svg

There is no overpopulation of wild horses. BLM’s harvesting model based management via roundups is disrupting herd dynamics and increasing the birthrate. Even so BLM’s allegations of overpopulation are fraudulent based on false data. They don’t even account for the correct mortality rates in the wild. Predators need to be reintroduced if anything. Wild horses are a return-native species that help reduce catastrophic wildfires and create biodiversity. The BLM is trying to manage America’s wild horses to extinction. The bottom line is America’s federally protected wild horses are underpopulated today. The BLM is creating a false crisis to cash in on wild horses as laboratory animals for fertility control experiments.

The content below is a BLM Press Release and does not reflect the views of Protect Mustangs:

Hines, Ore. – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Burns District announces the availability of a draft Environmental Assessment (EA) for Mare Sterilization Research at Oregon’s Wild Horse Corral Facility in Hines. In cooperation with Oregon State University, the BLM is proposing to investigate the safety and efficacy of three separate methods of surgical sterilization of wild horse mares: ovariectomy via colpotomy, tubal ligation, and hysteroscopically-guided laser ablation of the oviduct papilla.

A 30-day public comment period on the EA is set for January 5 through February 3, 2016. Comments can be mailed or faxed to the BLM Burns Office at the address below, or submitted by email to: blm_or_bu_mareresearchea@blm.gov. Entire comments – including personal identifying information – may be published as part of the EA and Decision Record process. Copies of the draft EA are available for review at the BLM Burns District Office during regular business hours, or online at https://eplanning.blm.gov/epl-front-office. This link takes you to BLM’s new ePlanning website. To search for the EA and unsigned FONSI you can either use the map to locate Burns District or click on the “Text Search” tab and search by state, document type, year, and program.

Attention: Mare Sterilization Research Project Lead

The BLM is investing in a diverse portfolio of research projects to develop new, modern technologies and methods for wild horse and burro management.

Research is aimed at finding safe and effective ways to slow the population growth rate and reduce the need to remove animals from public lands. The studies are in response to a 2013 recommendation from the National Academy of

Science to develop new or improve existing population grown suppression methods for wild horses and is in accordance with The Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971. Utah, Wyoming and Oregon have current or upcoming research projects.

For further information about Oregon’s Mare Sterilization Research project or to have your name added to the project mailing list, contact the Project Lead at (541) 573-4400.

The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land, the most of any Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM’s mission is to manage and conserve the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations under our mandate of multiple-use and sustained yield. In Fiscal Year 2014, the BLM generated $5.2 billion in receipts from public lands.

  1. This is just another ruse to pour our tax dollars into private contractors’ pockets. The notion of catching mares and performing major surgery on them and then turning them loose is absurd and outrageously costly AND COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY. The “horse overpopulation” myth was started by a fraudulent report concocted by the fracking industry. This war on horses is just a way of distracting us while the oil, fracking, mining and water privatization industries steal OUR land.

  2. The BLM lies. They have no right to do these sterilization techniques to our wild horses. No one put this to a
Vote from we the taxpayers. This is a Sure way to extinction for these horses. They and the burros deserve to live . The BLM was to protect these indigenous horses. Is this protection?
It is wrong to use them for lab rats. I believe they are just interested in being rid of them.. Extinction is forever. This is how they thank them for helping man make the west? It must stop! It all is cruelty. I WONDER HOW THESE MEN WOULD FEEL IF IT WERE DONE TO THEM? THEY HAVE NO HEART. A GOOD EMASCULATER OUGHT TO DO THE TRICK.

  3. This is sickening to think that there is a large amount of people involved in such barbarity. I don’t have to write much on this, the articles say it all. Plus, common sense should tell you that this is all just WRONG. My faith in humanity has once again been obliterated. *DO NOT CONTINUE THIS SICKENING CRUELTY TO ANIMALS!!!!

  4. This agency is supposed to protect and preserve our wild horses. Not experiment on them. Not stockpile them in government holding facilities. Not round them up and terrorize them. They are not doing what they are supposed to do, and they are not doing it with tax payers money. It’s way beyond time that this criminal, disgraceful agency answers for their crimes against America’s Wild Horses. This is horrifying.

  5. Yes this is barbaric and needs to end! The BLM are a vicious group who are trying to advance their own agenda instead of caring for our horses! They need to be stopped!

This is totally against the laws of nature and of God!

  7. Leave our wild horses alone! YOU are the ones who need sterilization! Stop playing God! Horses are a beautiful animal, leave them alone !!!!!

  8. Please leave our horses alone. The land belongs to them, not the ranchers. You are trying to kill off all our wild horses and burros. It is not right. I am so tired of you not listening to the people. We want our horses to run free, no experiments done on them, not taken to slaughter. Let them run free. Get rid of the ranchers!

  9. We need to speak up loudly to stop this. The BLM is doing whatever they want to these horses because no one is really looking out for them. They are an easy target. Comments due by 2/3/16 ~ Call your Congressmen and the President and raise hell! They all know this is happening (roundups, slaughter, etc) only a handful of them have tried to help the horses. Tell every one you know to comment and make calls too! We need a big commotion to the media gets involved. Please help! http://protectmustangs.org/?tag=american-preservation-campaign https://www.whitehouse.gov/administration/president-obama https://www.opencongress.org/people/zipcodelookup

  10. These wild horses are a national treasure and should not be used for bogus fertility experiments to facilitate a false premise that there is an over population problem–which there is not. These experiments and other callous mistreatment of these horses must be stopped.

  11. BLM NEEDS to be abolished. It is become nothing more than thugs and thieves . They are part of the problem with this country. We need to weed out the federal government and let the States take care of their own.

  12. @Maralee Kilts: Well, that’s not true. BLM certainly needs a major overhaul, but we DO NOT want the states to manage public land because if they did, We the People would no longer have any legal say or rights regarding these lands. States could plunder them for resources, sell them or do whatever they wanted without our input or consent.

Federal lands are held in trust for We the Actual People. They belong to US! The push to give them to states is just a ruse to allow corporate “persons” and individual billionaires to own them.

What should happen is federal lands should remain federal and Citizens United (which gives corporations the same rights as individuals human beings) should be overturned, and campaign finance should be reformed so that the 1% cannot buy elections. Then We the Actual People would be restored to our rightful place of control in this country.

This land was made for you and me, and having a government that is truly representative of the vast majority of actual human citizens (rather than corporations and a moneyed minority) is key to keeping it that way.

  13. Agree no state management BUT BLM does need to be drastically changed. Their ultimate goal here with the horses is far from good. They is no doubt another goal is on the horizon for the BLM which involves more dirty money than they’re getting now. Our beautiful God given horses are paying the price. A solution is desperately in need of NOW and the current plan is most ignorant and crazy ever put forth. STOP this before its too late! !

  14. The idea might be good but the methods are barbaric – please do not continue this terrible practice. These animals deserve a life of dignity and grace.

  15. BLM MS. AMY LEUDERS. STOP THE STERILIZATION. LEAVE THE WILD HORSES AND MUSTANG MARES FREE. ONLY STERILIZE MARES 20 YRS. OR OVER.THE BILLIONAIRE WELFARE RANCHERS AND THEIR FRIENDS OUT WEST ARE BEHIND ALL OF THIS SLAUGHTER AND KILLING OF THE WILD HORSES.THEY ARE SO GREEDY.

  16. Absolutely horrific! These are horrible experiments remind me of the deplorable experiments by the Nazis in WWII!!! What is the matter with the BLM and our government? I do not want these horrors happening to our wild horses!!

  17. WHY? Why do you want to destroy such beauty, magnificence and grace? Why for money? You can’t take it with you, it won’t buy you health or happiness. PLEASE STOP, THIS CRAZY, UNJUSTIFIED INSANITY AND LEAVE OUR WILD HORSES ALONE. LET THEM LIVE IN FREEDOM THE SAME AS YOU AND I DO. THEY HAVE EARNED IT, THIS NATION WAS BUILT ON THE BACK OF A HORSE!

  18. Please stop this barbaric treatment to our wild mares the sterilization process you plan on doing to the mares are barbaric and inhumane. BLM was appointed by the department of interior to PROTECT and manage not MURDER and TORTURE them. We all know the number of wild horses have been manipulated by the BLM and ranchers so that the BLM can wipe out the population of the horses and burros so ranchers can graze their cattle. I know the answer already but let’s see how you answer this question what’s more important doing your job by protecting wild horses and burros or the money the ranchers are bribing them to manipulate the numbets. I’m sure they won’t say the money but it is. How would they like someone reach inside them or their spouses and rip there ovaries out in nasty dirty pens. I think it’s about that time to get rid of the BLM and appoint truthful law abiding citizens that care about animals and the humane treatment of them. Back to the numbers there are 50 cattle to every one horse grazing on public land there are only approximately 10,000 horses left in the millions of PUBLIC not ranchers land. Fuck you BLM remember karma is a bitch

  19. This is a shameful, disgusting, barbaric practice – please STOP immediately! These animals deserve a life of respect, dignity and grace. I cannot believe such cruelty is being performed in this country. Where is your conscience?

  20. This is disgusting, how can we allow this to happen? How can an agency intended to protect run testing on these poor animals? This needs to be stopped! No animal is wild anymore once it’s been taken and tested on, and it is not their right to do so. Makes me sick that there are so many people in the world that are disturbed to that extent.

  21. Wildlife Control Officials, government officers, concerned persons: PLEASE STOP the RECENT UNNECESSARY INTERFERENCE with WILD HORSE populations. It is unwise, unsound, unscientific, and short-sighted. I will not speak about ‘ethical treatment of animals’, as I enjoy a good steak, and sometimes cowboys need to use force in handling livestock on farms. Im not going to say, ‘we have no right.’ BUT how foolish by any standards is the current view, the insistence that these Mustangs pose a threat? These horses are magnificent creatures, admired around the globe, the pride of America. Your science is bad, your evaluation of them as a burden on landowners, ignores larger economic and national issues. You are wasting tax dollars on unnecessary and dangerous interference. Wild horses have lived in peaceful coexistence with ranchers on this land for almost two hundred years now. So what has changed? It is the corporate rancher’s greed for the last blade of grass. Putting these beautiful healthy creatures in reserves to protect progress of business interests… sound familiar? There were others.. years ago, that we thought could simply be put behind fences to live, the native peoples were also at one time, considered in competition for land, an obstacle to the rancher, their very lives and existence inconvenient to US, afterall WE were going to DO something with the land and they werent… aren’t we ashamed of that history now?? How did THAT work out? They suffered and died, in spirit and in body. In captivity and interference there was disease and malnutrition, disruption to social structure and way of life. Most died, as we wanted them to. We just wanted to have less of them around. It makes thinking people cringe in shame and disgust, in hindsight. Right? Creatures who are built to live free, can only prosper free. The principle is the same with animals that live free. ANY WILDLIFE EXPERT SHOULD BE FAMILIAR WITH THE FOLLOWING FACTS. Wild animals cannot simply be put in pens and expected to prosper as they do outside of pens, they need to run in wide spaces. Flea and mite populations that spread disease, are kept down by movement over land, so eggs cannot build up in the horses habitat, hatch and return to the horse. Running also dislodges any dirt, mold, parasitic eggs and byproduct from clinging to a horses fur. It is the equivalent of a good brushing daily. Their hooves do not step in their own manure mixed with mud, as they do kept in pens. They do not get it on their mouths and faces while feeding. This also promotes disease. They cannot stay warm without exercise. This also promotes disease. Wild horses DO NOT NEED and CANNOT live with interference. They are not ‘over populated’ !! Like any other species in the wild, populations are controlled by availability of food and other factors. The truth is that they are in COMPETITION with CORPORATE INTERESTS, as ranchers are not happy with getting along okay, they want MORE and MAXIMUM profit, and in their mind, horses are EATING THEIR GRASS. Greed, not survival. Their cattle herds have ENOUGH to graze on, but they want the land to support MORE herds, MORE profit. We need as stewards AND economists, to look past immediate profit, to quality of life, future profits, pride in ourselves and our country. Mustangs were used by pioneers to open up the west, they are a proud part of our heritage, and travellers from all over the world, are thrilled to come and see them ranging still in wide open western spaces. This is MORE TO OUR PROFIT, than CRAMMING a FEW MORE BUCKS out of the land. Horses have coexisted with ranchers for TWO HUNDRED YEARS, so clearly it is not the problem we are making it out to be, and throwing HUGE AMOUNTS of TAX DOLLARS at. THE RESULT OF THE CONFINEMENT WILL BE INTRODUCING DISEASE TO THE WILD POPULATION OF MUSTANGS. Stop fixing what isn’t broken. BIG RANCH CORPORATIONS are not the only voice in this, just the loudest one. Don’t be afraid of them. Let them threaten local officials, let them lobby, let them coerce and claim ‘hardship’, when really it is striving for MORE and MAXIMUM profit. These wild horses are the proud spirit of America, let them be.

  22. Well said Tom Cortis this is sickening. I have dedicated my life to breeding and growing the endangered population of marsh tacky horses in South Carolina they are similar I the mustang in the west although there are no wild horses left in the east. Don’t make me come to Oregon and rally for sterilization of anyone in support of this atrocious act instead of our prized wild mares we should castrate the men who are behind this God forbid their children inherit their fathers complete disregard for our wild horses
