Wild Horse Wednesday™: Call Congress to stand up for the Free Roaming Wild Horse & Burro Act
Dear Friends,
The Free Roaming Wild Horse and Burro Act was signed into law 40 years ago on December 15th, yet today half of their roaming land has been taken away, herds are being wiped out and mustangs suffer at the hands of man.
They are wildlife. The horse is indigenous to America.
Despite the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) expensive PR spin—paid for with your tax dollars—America isn’t hearing the real story. Wild horses and burros are not destroying the range and they are not starving. How many tax dollars are spent to fool the American tax payer and global public?
Today’s industrialization of the West is the mustang’s biggest threat. Roundups are paid for with your tax dollars. The win-win is not being considered by corporate America . . . it’s all about the public land grab now.
Corporations are avoiding spending money on environmental impact reports and mitigation by encouraging the wild horses and burros to be rounded up before their projects break ground. You are paying for these cruel roundups with your tax dollars. The corporations are reaping the benefits.
Help us spread the word and voice your concerns about your tax dollars being spent on cruel roundups and removals. Ask Congress to demand an independent exact head count of how many mustangs are left. Ask your government representatives and senators to focus on the win-win for our wild horses and burros to remain free-roaming on the land in healthy genetically viable herds—not sterile groups.
The Salazar plan has gone ahead—despite public outcry with nationwide protests. It is a wipe-out plan leaving only a few wild horses in zoo-like settings on the range. Ask Congress to stand up for wild horses and burros—protect them to be living in freedom on the western range.
Be a hero for the wild horses and burros of America. Call your senators and representatives and ask them to stop the cruel roundups and removals. Call them every day through December 15th. Remind them that they work for us—even with corporate lobbyists making contributions—they are in government to be our voices.
Thank you for your help.
In gratitude,
Anne Novak

Horse slaughter ban is lifted
Petition to Stop USA Horse Slaughter
“America’s wild horses are particularly vulnerable to slaughter. They live in remote regions where they can be rounded up and sold by thieves to slaughter,” explains Anne Novak, Executive Director of Protect Mustangs. “They aren’t filled with chemicals like domestic horses so their meat could be in high demand abroad. There isn’t enough manpower in the BLM to prevent thieves from taking advantage of plants opening in the West. We must stop horse slaughter.”
Protect Mustangs is petitioning President Barack Obama and Congress to pass the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act of 2011, S.B. 1176/H.R. 2966—to make sure all horses in America are treated humanely and not slaughtered.”

Despite ban being lifted, BLM has no plans to sell wild horses for slaughter
Written by Steve Timko in the Reno Gazette-Journal
Congress lifted the ban in a spending bill passed by Congress and signed into law by President Barack Obama on Nov. 18 to keep the government afloat until mid-December. Slaughter opponents opted for a measure cutting off the funding in 2006 after other efforts to pass outright bans on horse slaughter failed in previous years.
However, despite the lifting of the ban, the Bureau of Land Management has no plans to change its policy that forbids using captured wild horses for meat.
BLM spokeswoman JoLynn Worley said that if a buyer is known to sell horses for slaughter, the BLM can refuse to sell to them. Or if a buyer tries to sell a wild horse for meat, the BLM can refuse to sell to them in the future.
Wild horses have a particular type of brand, and slaughterhouses are instructed to call the BLM before killing them, Worley said.
Horses considered estray and not wild are handled by the Nevada Department of Agriculture. No one from the department was available for comment Wednesday on its status now that the slaughter ban has been lifted.
Anne Novak of the California-based Protect Mustangs wild horse advocacy group said she worried that wild horses could be stolen off the range before the BLM brands them to be sold for meat.
“There just not enough manpower in the BLM to make sure these horses are not stolen and trucked off,” Novak said.
Novak said residential horse thefts dropped by a third after the meat processing plants were closed in 2006.
Douglas County wildlife ecologist Craig Downer said allowing the slaughter of horses gives horse breeders incentive to overbreed racehorses and sell the slower ones.
“If a person has a horse, they should take care of it for life,” Downer said. “They shouldn’t be able to take them down and have them slaughtered.”

Breaking News: Celebrities speak out against roundups & Old Gold’s death
Michael Blake and The Barbi Twins speak out against wild horse roundups
Do the death counts dupe Congress?
LOS ANGELES (November 28, 2011)—Academy Award winner-Michael Blake and the Barbi Twins join the American public and Protect Mustangs in their outrage over the death of Old Gold, a palomino wild mare who was euthanized by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) after being rounded up. Cat Kindsfather’s photos were released on the Protect Mustangs website showing the traumatized wild horse slammed into a metal panel at the trap, yet the (BLM) reports the mustang was euthanized because she was more than 20 years old—with a lack of body condition and worn teeth. The BLM counts Old Gold’s death as ‘not gather-related’. California-based Protect Mustangs believes the horse’s death is roundup-related and must be counted as such. They want Congress to be informed and taxpayers to know how their money is spent. Protect Mustangs asks the Obama Administration to freeze all roundups now, end inhumane treatment of wild horses and burros, save taxpayer money and conduct an exact head count on the ranges to know exactly how many treasured wild horses and burros exist in the wild.
“Old Gold was traumatized at the trap and slammed into a metal fence where she surely was injured,” explains Anne Novak, Executive Director of Protect Mustangs from Berkeley. “Congress hears about a 1% death rate at roundups but how can that be? BLM’s accountability is in question now that the agency lists Old Gold’s death as ‘non gather-related’”.
As of November 27th, six deaths have occurred at the Calico roundup. Five were listed as ‘non gather-related’ deaths—including killing Old Gold. Only one death has been classified as a “gather-related” death, according to the BLM death report.
“Killing the wild mare, Old Gold, is nothing new. The United States government has allowed its BLM and other agencies to kill animals forever . . . just for money,” states Michael Blake, Academy Award winning screenwriter of DANCES WITH WOLVES.
BLM must correct its policy to insure that the welfare of wild horses and burros is considered above the contractor’s payment per head for each animal rounded up and delivered to BLM.
Protect Mustangs is requesting transparency from the BLM about the amount paid per wild horse (adult and youngster) and at what point is the horse considered “delivered” for payment. Also they want to know if the contractor gets paid if a horse is euthanized after “delivery”.
“American taxpayers don’t want to pay for animal cruelty,” states Novak. “We don’t want wild horses and burros to be traumatized, injured and killed at the hands of our government. We want the roundups to stop now.”
Two winters ago BLM rounded up Calico wild horses in what was the deadliest wild horse roundup documented. Of the 1922 mustangs rounded up, more than 158 deaths are attributed to the roundup.
Protect Mustangs is concerned the 2011 Calico roundup will virtually wipe the wild horses off the half a million acre landscape near Gerlach, Nevada where Burning Man is held. They are circulating a petition to stop the Calico roundup.
“If it weren’t for horses, we wouldn’t have a country or a flag,” say The Barbi Twins (Shane & Sia). “Why can’t there be laws to protect them, like there are for the flag? Horses are living beings. Their blood’s been used to make the red in the red, white and blue, as you can see in the forthcoming movie, WAR HORSE.”
The wild horse advocacy group asks Congress for a full investigation into deaths at helicopter roundups and resulting from roundups 4 months after capture.

Mustang Monday™: Contact Congress
In all time zones, email, fax or call your senators and representatives to let them know that “Old Gold”, an American wild horse was rounded up near Gerlach, Nevada on November 19th and euthanized later by the BLM because of being old. At the trap site she was traumatized, slammed into a metal panel and was surely injured. Explain that BLM is not counting her death as a roundup-related death. Tell them Old Gold is an example BLM’s poor accountability and using tax dollars for animal cruelty. Remind them that Congress gives BLM $75 million annually for this broken program. Ask Congress to stop the Calico roundup and freeze all others until an independent, accurate headcount is made and a sustainable manage plan proves that more wild horses and burros need to be removed to have thriving natural ecological balance (TNEB).
“The roundups in the Ruby Pipeline zone are questionable,” states Katie Fite, biologist and biodiversity specialist. “The public is not being told the truth. There needs to be an investigation within all levels of BLM considering the unavoidable damage to our public lands. There is no mitigation provided for to restore this biologically wild, remote, and untrammeled landscape in northwestern Nevada and southeastern Oregon.”
We see TNEB in Calico except for industrialization and right of way projects like the Ruby Pipeline. Wild horses and burros are not the problem. Be sure to let YOUR representatives in government know how you feel.
RIP Old Gold.
Press Release: First Calico Death
First death at Calico roundup must be accounted for
Brought in from home on the range—mustang is killed for being old
RENO (November 26, 2011)—Wild horse advocate and photographer, Cat Kindsfather, attended the first day of the Calico roundup near Gerlach, Nevada on November 19. She witnessed an exhausted older palomino mare, she named Old Gold, come into the trap after being chased by the helicopter for more than one hour. She took pictures of the terrified horses in the trap pen fleeing from the whips with plastic tied on them and documented the incident in which the wild horse was slammed into the trap corral and must have been injured. This week, Protect Mustangs learned the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) euthanized the mare on November 21st and claim it was a “non-gather related” death. The advocacy group believes it is a roundup-related death and needs to be counted as such. Protect mustangs wants America’s indigenous wild horses to remain wild and free on their legally designated ranges. They believe wild horses and burros must be treated humanely—not chased for miles in freezing temperatures putting them at risk of getting pneumonia and not terrorizing them using whips with plastic ends to move them around in crammed trap pens resulting in trauma.
“So many wild horses die because of roundups yet the BLM does not count the deaths accurately,” explains Anne Novak, Executive Director of the California-based Protect Mustangs. “Congress hears that there is only a 1% death rate at ‘gathers’. We want transparency and accountability for all the deaths at roundups. If a horse is chased by a helicopter for miles and miles, then while in a trap pen terrified with plastic tied on to whips, slammed into a metal panel, next shoved into a trailer and transported to another holding facility and is put down a day or two afterwards—it is related to the roundup. If Old Gold had not been rounded up, I bet she would be alive today.”
Kindsfather’s photos document the last moments of freedom for Old Gold. She also captured the horses’ terror in the trap pen and the mare’s agony against the fence.
“She made it all the way in after being chased by the helicopter but was exhausted,’ states Kindsfather. “In the trap pen, the group of horses were scared by the wrangler using a whip with a plastic bag tied on to it. The horses panicked, ran into the mare and piled up against her—smashing her into the fence. In an already terrifying situation, he continued to use the whip to get the mare up on her feet.”
“The mare could have tied up (had severe muscle spasms) after being chased for miles in the freezing weather and then forced into a crammed pen where she was not walking around enough for her muscles to cool down properly,” says Kerry Becklund, wild horse advocate with Protect Mustangs. “Advocates need to see the mustangs’ when they are brought in but we are kept away. It’s clear from looking at the photos that the mare was in distress and the whips aggravated her fear. She did not deserve to be put down after surviving this ordeal—she deserved to live.”
Protect Mustangs firmly believes that BLM should not have the right to stampede in an older horse and then kill her because she is old—with an old horse’s body condition and worn teeth. The wild horse was surviving on the range as a wild animal does and was holding the wisdom of the herd.
“Once the BLM brings in a wild horse it is their responsibility to care for the horse,” states Novak. “We want to know how much the contractor is paid to bring in an older horse who would be put down because it was old. When does the contractor get paid for the horse—once the horse is in the trap pen or later when she is in temporary holding? Old Gold was put down in temporary holding.”
Protect Mustangs is circulating a petition to stop the roundup. The advocacy group wants to end fiscal irresponsibility seen in roundups without accurate head-counts and without proving the horses thwart the thriving natural ecological balance. Nothing is science-based yet Congress gave more than 75 million dollars to the Wild Horse and Burro Program mostly for roundups and warehousing. Today 40,000 captured American wild horses are warehoused at huge taxpayer expense.
“I’m sure some kindhearted person would have adopted the mare to give her a good life despite any lack of body condition,” shares Kindsfather. “It’s too soon to be doing another Calico roundup. The wild horses should remain free—our living gems in a treasured landscape.”
